OpenAI just announced that ChatGPT will soon be able to connect directly to your bank accounts. The company is previewing a new feature that lets users securely link the chatbot to Plaid, the middleware platform that bridges apps and financial institutions. Plaid works with more than 12,000 banks and brokerages, including Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, and Capital One. So if you’ve got credit card debt, a savings account, or a 401k, ChatGPT could soon know exactly where you stand.
The move makes a lot of sense when you look at the numbers. OpenAI says over 200 million people already come to ChatGPT every month asking finance questions, from budgeting tips to advice on cutting spending. But until now, the chatbot has been working blind: it can give general advice, but it has no real visibility into your actual money situation. Connecting via Plaid changes that. It gives ChatGPT a full picture of your finances, so it can offer personalized guidance based on your real transactions and balances.
Of course, this raises some obvious questions about trust and privacy. Tying an AI chatbot to your checking account is a big step, and OpenAI is leaning hard on the word "secure." Plaid has been around for years and handles sensitive data for millions of users, but adding an AI layer on top is new territory. The feature is only in preview for now, so we’ll see how users respond once it rolls out more broadly.
The big takeaway is that OpenAI is betting people want more than generic financial advice. They want a chatbot that can look at their actual spending, see their debt, and help them make real decisions. Whether that’s a helpful tool or a privacy nightmare will probably depend on how well the company handles the trust piece going forward.
