Google just gave me a chance to test its new AI agent, Gemini Spark. It’s supposed to be a 24/7 assistant that can handle multi step tasks for you in the background while you step away from your phone or laptop. And honestly, Spark is surprisingly good at that part. The company says it can take over things like booking appointments, managing your calendar, or even filling out forms, all while you do something else. It works.
But here’s the thing: I’m not sure it’s worth it. Google is upfront that Spark is always under your direction, that you choose when to turn it on, and that it checks with you before taking major actions. That’s nice and all. The real concern is what you pay for it. There’s the direct financial cost, which isn’t cheap, and then there’s the privacy tradeoff. You are handing over a lot of control and personal data to an AI that runs constantly in the background.
I got access last week and spent serious time poking at it. Spark does feel like a step forward for AI agents. But the question Google hasn’t really answered is whether most people actually need this. The company is betting that convenience will win out over caution. For me, that bet still feels shaky. It works, but at a cost that might be too high.
